Frequently asked questions
General questions
What is makelist.co?
makelist.co is a free tool that converts website tracklists into Spotify playlists. Paste a URL containing a tracklist, and makelist.co extracts the track information and creates a playlist in your Spotify account.
How much does it cost?
makelist.co is completely free to use. There are no subscriptions, premium tiers, or hidden fees.
Do I need a Spotify account?
Yes, you need a Spotify account to create playlists. Both free and premium Spotify accounts work with makelist.co.
What websites does it work with?
makelist.co works with any website that contains a tracklist in text form. It works particularly well with:
- Community radio (NTS, Rinse FM, Worldwide FM, BBC Radio 6 Music)
- DJ mix platforms (Mixcloud, SoundCloud)
- Music blogs and publications
- Festival lineup pages
- YouTube video descriptions
Do I need to create an account?
No. makelist.co doesn't require you to create an account. You just need to connect your existing Spotify account when you're ready to create a playlist.
How it works
How does makelist.co extract tracks from a page?
makelist.co uses AI to read webpage content and identify track names and artists. The AI understands various formats like "Artist - Track", "Track by Artist", timestamped lists, numbered lists, and more.
Why aren't all tracks found on Spotify?
Some tracks may not be matched because:
- The track isn't available on Spotify (licensing restrictions, regional availability)
- The track has a different name on Spotify than in the tracklist
- The track is a bootleg, edit, or unreleased version
- The artist name is spelled differently or uses a different alias
Can I edit the playlist after it's created?
Yes. Once the playlist is in your Spotify account, it's yours. You can edit it like any other playlist - add tracks, remove tracks, reorder, rename, change the cover image, or share it.
How accurate is the track matching?
makelist.co shows a confidence score for each match. Most tracks match correctly, but occasionally Spotify may return:
- A different version (remix vs original)
- A cover version instead of the original
- A live version instead of the studio recording
You can correct any mistakes directly in Spotify.
How long does extraction take?
Typically 30-60 seconds, depending on the size of the tracklist and the complexity of the page.
Does it work with pages behind a login?
No. makelist.co can only access publicly available pages. If a page requires you to log in to see it, makelist.co cannot extract the tracklist.
Privacy and data
What data do you collect?
makelist.co doesn't store your playlists, tracklists, or listening history. The URLs you submit are processed and then discarded.
Do you have access to my Spotify account?
makelist.co only requests permission to create playlists on your behalf. It cannot:
- Access your listening history
- See your saved tracks or albums
- View your other playlists
- Access your payment information
- Change your account settings
How is Spotify authentication handled?
Authentication uses Spotify's official OAuth system. Your Spotify password is never shared with makelist.co - you log in directly with Spotify, and Spotify provides makelist.co with a limited access token.
Can I revoke makelist.co's access to my Spotify?
Yes. You can revoke access at any time:
Troubleshooting
The page didn't load properly
Some pages use heavy JavaScript that makelist.co can't process. Try:
- Using a different URL for the same content (e.g., the desktop version instead of mobile)
- Checking if the page has a simpler, text-based version
- Copying the tracklist text and using it directly
No tracks were found
This usually means:
- The page doesn't contain a text-based tracklist
- The tracklist is in an image or embedded player
- The formatting is unusual and the AI couldn't parse it
Try a different source for the same tracklist, or check if the tracklist is actually visible on the page.
Wrong tracks were matched
This happens when track names are common or the artist name is ambiguous. For example, a track called "Blue" by an artist called "Red" might match the wrong song.
You can edit the playlist directly in Spotify to correct any mistakes.
The playlist was created but Spotify didn't open
If Spotify doesn't open automatically, you can find your new playlist in your Spotify library under "Playlists". It will have the name of the source page (e.g., the show name or mix title).
